As the recession grinds on, here is a fresh food product that will provide the basis for a family of four’s meals for a fortnight –
and it will cost you about the same as a packet of 10 cigarettes.

Where’s the catch? There isn’t one. These potatoes were grown in Tenterden, and lifted in September. The only criticism that can be made – and this is the reason for the low price – is that they are on the small side. Between about 40mm and 60mm in diameter, to be precise. This means that you probably wouldn’t want to peel all these potatoes. Rather, you’re better off scrubbing the smaller ones, cutting them in half and boiling, mashing or roasting them. They are also suitable for making small potato wedges. Whichever way you decide to cook them, they are a fresh local food at a price of 12p per kilogram – which is utterly unbeatable …
